Pool and Hot Tub FAQ for Nova Scotia | McBurney LeisureScapes

Question 1

What areas of Nova Scotia does McBurney LeisureScapes serve?

Accepted Answer

McBurney LeisureScapes has a showroom in Dartmouth and a second location in Shubenacadie by appointment. The team helps customers in Halifax, Dartmouth and surrounding Nova Scotia communities with pools, hot tubs, products and service enquiries. For on-site work in Bedford, Sackville, Truro or elsewhere in the province, contact McBurney LeisureScapes with your address and requested service to confirm availability before booking.

Question 2

Where are McBurney LeisureScapes’ Dartmouth and Shubenacadie locations?

Accepted Answer

The Dartmouth showroom is at 100 Frazee Avenue, Burnside Industrial Park, Dartmouth, NS B3B 0A2. The Shubenacadie location is at 20839 Highway 2, Shubenacadie, NS B0N 2H0 and is by appointment only. Check current hours and contact details on the contact page before visiting.

Question 3

How do I get started with a new pool or hot tub?

Accepted Answer

Start with your intended use, available space, approximate budget and preferred timing. For a pool, note the yard dimensions, slope, access route and any deck plans. For a spa, consider regular users, seating preferences, power requirements and delivery access. Explore swimming pool options and hot tub collection, then contact McBurney LeisureScapes to discuss suitable products and next steps.

Question 4

Can I request a quote before choosing a specific pool or hot tub?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You can request information before settling on a model. Share your preferred product type, approximate dimensions or seating capacity, property location and your questions. Pool quotes should identify the included equipment, site preparation, delivery, installation and any separately priced work. Start through McBurney’s contact page or relevant product page.

Question 5

How early should I plan a swimming pool project in Nova Scotia?

Accepted Answer

Begin before your hoped-for swimming season. Product selection, access assessment, local requirements, ground conditions, contractor coordination and scheduling can affect the timeline. Spring demand and Atlantic weather can also affect dates. Discuss a project-specific schedule with McBurney rather than relying on a fixed number of weeks for every backyard.

Question 6

Do I need a pool permit or fence in Halifax or another Nova Scotia municipality?

Accepted Answer

Pool permit, enclosure, gate, setback and electrical requirements depend on the municipality, pool type and property. A Halifax-area address may have different rules from an East Hants or other Nova Scotia address. Confirm current requirements directly with the relevant municipal authority and qualified trades before starting work. Ask McBurney how your chosen swimming pool options may affect the project plan.

Question 7

Can a swimming pool work in a sloped or difficult-access backyard?

Accepted Answer

Possibly. The usable area, slope, soil, drainage, access width and retaining or decking needs determine what is practical. McBurney’s Rockwood On-Ground pool system can be installed in different above-grade or recessed configurations where the site and project allow. Get a property-specific assessment before assuming that any pool can be recessed or installed on a slope.

Question 8

What types of swimming pools does McBurney LeisureScapes sell?

Accepted Answer

McBurney LeisureScapes currently highlights Above Ground pools and the Rockwood On-Ground pool system. Traditional Above Ground models include round and oval options. Rockwood offers flexibility for above-grade and, subject to the site and design, partially or fully recessed installations. Compare the Above Ground pool collection and Rockwood On-Ground pool system before selecting a pool for your Nova Scotia backyard.

Question 9

What is the difference between an Above Ground pool and a Rockwood On-Ground pool?

Accepted Answer

A traditional Above Ground pool is designed to sit above the surrounding grade. The Rockwood On-Ground pool system offers additional flexibility for integration with decking, landscaping and changing ground levels, including some recessed installation designs. Neither option is automatically best: consider access, site preparation, finished appearance and the overall project budget.

Question 10

Can a Rockwood pool be installed partially or fully in the ground?

Accepted Answer

The Rockwood On-Ground system is promoted with above-grade, partially recessed and fully recessed configuration possibilities. The suitable approach depends on excavation conditions, drainage, engineering, site access, permits and the specific pool specifications. Discuss these requirements with McBurney before choosing a recessed design. See the Rockwood On-Ground pool system.

Question 11

How do I choose the right pool size and shape for my yard?

Accepted Answer

First decide whether the pool is mainly for family play, cooling off, floating or exercise. Then measure usable space, allow for required clearances and safe access, and consider where your deck, stairs, equipment and seating will go. McBurney’s Above Ground pool collection includes round and oval styles; compare those dimensions with the Rockwood On-Ground pool system and your property layout.

Question 12

What affects the cost of an Above Ground or On-Ground pool in Nova Scotia?

Accepted Answer

The pool model and size are only part of the total. Ground preparation, grading, drainage, access, delivery, electrical work, pumps, filters, heaters, ladders or steps, permits, fencing, decks and landscaping may affect project cost. Ask for a written breakdown that distinguishes the pool package from installation and finishing work. Browse swimming pool options and contact the team for current pricing.

Question 13

Does every Above Ground pool need professional installation?

Accepted Answer

Installation requirements vary by model and property. The base must be properly prepared and level, the pool must be assembled to the manufacturer’s instructions, and filtration and electrical components must meet applicable requirements. A sloped or constrained site can add complexity. Ask McBurney what installation support or recommendations apply to the exact pool you are considering.

Question 14

What should I prepare before my new swimming pool arrives?

Accepted Answer

Confirm the approved pool location, grade, utility locations, equipment area, access route, permits and enclosure plan where applicable. Check how water will drain away from the house and pool, and where a future deck or seating area will fit. Keep clear space for safe equipment access. Review the chosen pool’s specifications with McBurney before hiring trades or pouring a pad.

Question 15

Which swimming pool services does McBurney LeisureScapes offer?

Accepted Answer

McBurney lists pool openings, pool closings, pool repairs and pool renovations. Service requests may involve pumps, filters, skimmers, lights, equipment installation, solar blankets and rollers, liner or coping replacement, major leaks and saltwater conversion. Visit the pool and hot tub services page to choose the specific service you need and request an appointment.

Question 16

When should I book a pool opening in Nova Scotia?

Accepted Answer

Book ahead of the period when you want to start swimming, especially if you have a preferred spring opening date. The right date depends on weather, frost, pool condition and when you can begin circulating and maintaining the water consistently. McBurney offers professional pool opening service; see pool and hot tub services for booking options.

Question 17

When is the best time to close my pool in Nova Scotia?

Accepted Answer

There is no single date for every pool. Monitor water temperature, weather forecasts and your ability to maintain circulation and sanitizer. Closing too early while water remains warm can encourage algae; waiting until freezing conditions arrive can risk equipment. For a local planning checklist, read McBurney’s Nova Scotia pool closing guide and book through pool and hot tub services.

Question 18

Can I close my swimming pool myself?

Accepted Answer

Some experienced owners complete their own winterization, but preventing freeze damage requires the correct procedure for the pool, plumbing, pump, filter, heater, fittings and cover. Missing water in a vulnerable line can cause expensive damage. Follow the equipment manuals and the local closing checklist; request professional closing service if you are unsure about any step.

Question 19

Why is my swimming pool water cloudy or green?

Accepted Answer

Common causes include inadequate sanitizer, algae, water imbalance, poor circulation, filter problems or debris after heavy rain. Start with reliable water testing and inspect circulation and filtration; treat according to the results and product labels rather than adding several chemicals at once. McBurney sells pool water-care products and can discuss equipment concerns through pool and hot tub services.

Question 20

How can I tell if my pool is leaking rather than losing water to evaporation?

Accepted Answer

Water loss changes with wind, temperature, humidity and swimming activity, but a consistent unexplained drop may indicate a leak. Look for damp ground, visible liner damage, plumbing drips or unusual equipment behaviour. Record when the water level changes and whether the pump is running; ask about assessment or repairs on McBurney’s pool and hot tub services page if the cause is unclear.

Question 21

What should I do if my pool pump is noisy or not circulating properly?

Accepted Answer

Turn the system off if it is running dry, overheating or behaving unsafely. Check the skimmer and pump basket, water level and obvious obstructions only when it is safe to do so and according to the manual. Air leaks, blocked lines, damaged components or electrical problems can also affect circulation. McBurney handles pool equipment service through pool and hot tub services.

Question 22

Can McBurney help renovate an existing swimming pool?

Accepted Answer

Yes. McBurney lists pool renovations that may include liner replacement, coping changes, major leak repairs and saltwater conversion. Whether repair or a larger upgrade makes sense depends on the condition of the pool and equipment. Browse the pool renovation guide or contact the service team for an assessment.

Question 23

When might a pool liner need replacement?

Accepted Answer

Warning signs can include tears, brittleness, cracking, persistent wrinkles, unusual stretching, seams separating or leakage traced to the liner. Some discoloration alone does not necessarily mean replacement is needed. Because water and ground conditions also matter, have the cause checked before ordering a new liner. McBurney lists liner replacement under pool and hot tub services.

Question 24

Can my existing pool be converted to saltwater?

Accepted Answer

McBurney lists saltwater conversion among its pool renovation services. Compatibility depends on your pool materials, plumbing, electrical equipment, water chemistry and the chosen chlorination system. A saltwater pool still needs sanitizer monitoring, pH management and regular care. Discuss system compatibility with McBurney’s pool renovation team.

Question 25

Can McBurney help with swimming pool water testing?

Accepted Answer

McBurney’s pool-opening guidance describes bringing a water sample to its in-store water-testing station for advice on balancing the water. Confirm current testing availability and sample instructions before visiting. For at-home checks, review McBurney’s pool water-care products, and always follow the specific product label and your pool equipment guidance.

Question 26

What hot tub brands can I shop at McBurney LeisureScapes?

Accepted Answer

McBurney’s current hot-tub catalogue primarily features Beachcomber models and also lists OWOW and Lumi-O Plug & Play options. Stock and model availability change. Compare seating, dimensions, heating and electrical requirements, insulation and delivery needs in the hot tub collection.

Question 27

Why should I compare Beachcomber hot tub models instead of just jet counts?

Accepted Answer

How the seat fits your body and where the jets contact your back, shoulders, legs and feet matter more than a jet count alone. Compare loungers, upright therapy seats, open layouts, dimensions, cover systems and electrical needs. McBurney’s interactive hot tub seating guide can help narrow down models using seating preferences and massage priorities.

Question 28

Can I use a hot tub all winter in Nova Scotia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a suitable hot tub can be used year-round when installed and maintained correctly. During cold Nova Scotia weather, monitor water level, heating and circulation, keep the cover fitted and check the spa regularly, especially during storms or power interruptions. If the heater or circulation stops in freezing weather, seek help promptly to reduce freeze risk. Explore hot tub collection for current options.

Question 29

How do I choose the right hot tub size and seats for my family?

Accepted Answer

Think about the number of people who will use the spa regularly, differences in height, preferred massage areas, whether anyone wants a lounger and how much foot space the seats leave. The advertised seating capacity does not tell you how comfortable the layout will feel. Compare dimensions and individual seat configurations with McBurney’s hot tub seating guide.

Question 30

Do I need 120V or 240V power for a hot tub?

Accepted Answer

The electrical requirement depends on the exact spa model and configuration. Some plug-and-play models use a manufacturer-approved 120V connection, while other hot tubs require dedicated 240V service. Heating and jet-operation behaviour may differ by setup. Do not assume any household outlet will work: review the spa specifications and use a licensed electrician for required work. See McBurney’s hot tub collection.

Question 31

What kind of base does a hot tub need?

Accepted Answer

A filled hot tub is very heavy. It requires a flat, stable, load-appropriate support built to the exact manufacturer requirements; options may involve an engineered concrete pad or another approved base. A deck must be checked for the full loaded weight, not just the dry spa weight. Plan drainage and access to removable panels before delivery and confirm details with McBurney.

Question 32

What should I measure before a hot tub is delivered?

Accepted Answer

Measure the route from the delivery point to the installation area, including gates, corners, steps and narrow walkways. Note slopes, overhead branches, wires, soft ground and nearby structures. Confirm the spa dimensions, cover lifter clearance, electrical readiness and service access. Share measurements and photos with McBurney before finalizing delivery arrangements.

Question 33

What affects hot tub operating costs in Nova Scotia?

Accepted Answer

Outdoor temperature, electricity rates, the spa’s insulation and size, water temperature, usage, filtration schedule, wind exposure and cover condition all influence energy use. A well-fitting cover and properly maintained system help reduce heat loss. Ask for the exact model’s operating specifications when comparing the hot tub collection; no single monthly amount will apply to every household.

Question 34

What hot tub services does McBurney LeisureScapes provide?

Accepted Answer

McBurney lists hot tub openings, hot tub closings, hot tub repairs and service, and hot tub drain-and-refill visits. Service can include seasonal start-up or winterization, troubleshooting and mechanical-system attention. Use the pool and hot tub services page to select the appropriate service and provide the hot tub make, model and symptoms.

Question 35

Does McBurney offer professional hot tub drain and refill service?

Accepted Answer

Yes. McBurney specifically lists a hot tub drain-and-refill service that involves draining, cleaning and refilling as part of routine water care. You can request that service through the hot tub service booking page. Confirm appointment availability, service scope and any start-up chemicals or supplies needed when booking.

Question 36

How often should hot tub water be drained and replaced?

Accepted Answer

The schedule depends on the spa manufacturer’s guidance, water-care system, bather load, frequency of use and test results. More frequent use can shorten the useful life of the water. If clarity, foam or balance problems keep returning despite correct treatment, a drain and fresh fill may be appropriate. McBurney offers drain-and-refill appointments and hot tub water-care products.

Question 37

What should I do if my hot tub stops heating?

Accepted Answer

Check for an error message, confirm water level and whether circulation is working, and consult the owner’s manual for safe basic checks. Avoid electrical repairs yourself. If the tub stops heating during freezing weather, arrange help promptly because the plumbing and equipment can be vulnerable to freeze damage. Request assistance through McBurney’s pool and hot tub services page.

Question 38

How do I keep my hot tub water clear and balanced?

Accepted Answer

Test sanitizer and water balance according to the water-care system and product labels, particularly after heavy use or refilling. Clean filters on the recommended schedule, maintain circulation and replace water when needed. Cloudy or foamy water can have several causes, so do not mix products or guess at doses. Shop McBurney’s hot tub water-care products or request water-care guidance.

Question 39

Should I keep my hot tub running or close it for the winter?

Accepted Answer

For regular winter use, a properly working spa can remain heated and circulating with attentive water care. If it will be shut down, full winterization is important because draining the shell alone does not necessarily empty vulnerable plumbing or equipment. McBurney offers professional hot tub closing; schedule ahead if you will not use the spa over winter.

Question 40

When should I replace a hot tub cover?

Accepted Answer

A cover that is waterlogged, unusually heavy, damaged, sagging or no longer seals properly can lose insulation performance and may be unsafe or awkward to handle. Snow and wind can add strain in Nova Scotia. Measure and match a replacement to the spa model rather than guessing from its outside dimensions. Ask about compatible accessories through McBurney’s hot tub accessories selection.

Question 41

Can I buy pool and hot tub chemicals online from McBurney?

Accepted Answer

Yes. McBurney has online product categories for pool water-care products, hot tub water-care products, pool equipment, parts and accessories. Check product availability and the exact formulation before ordering, and never use a chemical in a way that conflicts with its label or your system’s instructions.

Question 42

How can I find the right replacement filter, pump or part?

Accepted Answer

Use the equipment brand, model, serial number and original part information whenever possible. Parts that look similar may differ in flow rating, dimensions, threads or electrical specification. Browse McBurney’s online catalogue or contact McBurney LeisureScapes with clear photos and part details before purchasing.

Question 43

Which chemicals do I need when opening a pool?

Accepted Answer

The correct products depend on tested water chemistry, pool volume, sanitizer system, filter condition and what happened over winter. Typical start-up work includes removing debris, restarting filtration and balancing the water according to current readings. McBurney offers pool water-care supplies and an opening guide; follow each product’s label.

Question 44

Does McBurney offer financing information for pools and hot tubs?

Accepted Answer

McBurney links to a third-party financing option from its website. Approval, rates, eligibility and payment terms depend on the finance provider and current offer; do not assume an advertised sample payment applies to a particular pool or hot tub. Ask the team for the current financing and purchase information before making a decision.

Question 45

What should I have ready when contacting McBurney about a problem?

Accepted Answer

Include your name and location, pool or spa type, manufacturer and model if known, when the issue started, any error messages and what you have already checked. Photos of the equipment label, plumbing or visible damage can be helpful. For work at your property, share the address so McBurney can confirm service availability. Begin on the service page or contact page.
